Among the first important buildings to be erected in Valletta, the new seat of the Order was the Palace of the Grandmaster. At the beginning the building was very modest and consisted of a hall and two small rooms. It was Grandmaster Del Monte in 1571 that bought the surrounding property to build the Palace. This full colour book gives a full account of the development of the building and a description of the paintings and other object-arts found in this magnificent Palace. The last chapter of this book is dedicated to the Palace Armoury, which is located on the ground floor of the rear side of the palace. Originally Grandmaster Emanuel Pinto de Fonseca (1741 - 1773) had housed the Armoury of the Order of the Knights of St. John on the same wing of the palace but on the first floor. It was then one of the largest single armoury halls in existence (78 metres long and 12 meters wide). |
